Student Outreach

There are several ways in which we reach out to students within the JMU community.

Student Handbook

One of the biggest ways that we reach out to students is through the publication of the JMU Student Handbook. The handbook lays out the University's policies and expectations of JMU students. It is important for students to realize that all communities have expectations of their members, and ours does too. We approach our role in the accountability process with the intent to educate, not punish; aiming to help students learn and grow from an incident. By enrolling at JMU, a student agrees to be held accountable to the Student Handbook and should familiarize themselves with it's contents.

Restorative Practices

When harms to the community and relationships have been done, our Restorative Practices staff can help individuals and groups restore communication and take the steps necessary to build those relationships again.

Restorative Practices services include:

  • Restorative Justice
  • Mediation
  • Facilitated Dialogue
  • Conflict Coaching
  • Program Assessment

University Outreach

Another way that we reach out to students is by training many of the groups that have contact with freshmen. Our Administrative staff trains Orientation Peer Advisors (OPAs), First Year Orientation Guides (FROGs), and Residence Advisors (RAs) each year about our office, our policies, and the services we offer. We also reach out to freshmen through orientation using the OneBook, as our office includes extensive information they should know prior to coming to campus.

Outreach Programs

Looking for a unique learning experience for your organization, club, team, or even yourself? Our Educational Programs are also available on a volunteer basis. Request one of our programs today by completing the outreach request form online.

Educational Presentations
