Substance Free Housing
The Substance Free Community, located in Ashby Hall for the 2011-2012 academic year, is an exciting living opportunity for students who do not smoke, use or possess alcohol and/or other drugs. Students can be confident that these communities will be free of alcohol and other drugs regardless of individual choices made by fellow residents.*
Substance Free Housing Agreement:
All who are selected to live in a substance free environment must read and sign the following agreement upon check-in:
Substance Free Living Environments are residential living units where residents have agreed to keep their environment free of all types of smoke and/or tobacco products, alcohol, and illegal drugs at all times. This is a supportive community for students who, for clinical, medical, or personal reasons choose not to smoke, use tobacco products, consume alcoholic beverages, or use other illegal drugs. Students who are smokers shall not live in a substance free residence hall. All existing federal, state, and university regulations concerning alcohol, smoking, and other drug use are applicable in addition to the following community standards:
The possession, use, or consumption of smoke/tobacco products, beverages containing alcohol, or illegal drugs will not be permitted in the substance-free hall at any time. Entering the substance free hall under the influence, or after the use of, the above stated substances is prohibited, and is a violation of this agreement.
Entering the hall smelling strongly of smoke or alcohol, or otherwise creating any substance-related disturbance that negatively impacts individuals in the community may be a violation of this agreement.
Residents of the substance-free hall are responsible for the behavior of their guests, and assume accountability for actions of guests. It is the responsibility of the resident to insure that guests are aware of and abide by all hall policies, including this agreement.
A $75 fine will be imposed upon any resident/host found in violation of the substance free agreement. Any violation may result in additional disciplinary action, change of room assignment, or suspension from university housing.
Any resident who violates the substance free policy twice will be minimally required to move to another hall. Additional disciplinary action and fines may also be imposed.
*Smoking is not permitted in any residence hall and pervasive smoke is not a problem in any of our residence halls. Residents and visitors of all residence halls must abide by Commonwealth of Virginia Laws stating that it is unlawful for any person under the age of 21 to purchase, consume or possess any alcoholic beverage. Possession, use or distribution of any illegal drug is prohibited in any building on any property owned by the university in accordance with the Drug Control Act of the Commonwealth of Virginia.
