Second Year Housing Contracts
What is it?
- The Second Year Contract is offered only to incoming freshmen and is a contract for the sophomore year which guarantees the student a space on campus for 2014-15.
Is it required?
- NO! This is an optional contract and should only be signed by students who are 100% sure they want to be on campus their sophomore year.
Is it a back-up plan while I shop around for off campus housing?
- NO! The contract is binding and you cannot cancel it at a later date. If you sign the second year contract you will have a space on campus next year and billed for on campus housing and a resident meal plan.
Will there be another chance to secure second year housing?
- YES! Applications for second year housing will be made available using the Online Housing System beginning October 7 at 1:15 PM.
Where will I be assigned to live for my second year?

- No. The room selection process is based on a random lottery system amongst all contract holders whether you sign a contract in April or the following January, contract signature date does not play a role.
What if my preferred hall(s) are already full when it is my turn to select a room?
- You will have to select a space in another hall. The second year contract does not guarantee you access to any specific hall or room on campus. You should be prepared to live in any of the halls listed above.
When do I choose my room?
- Online Room Selection will take place after Spring Break in March 2014.
Will my costs be the same both years?
- No. Room rates tend to increase 3% - 4% annually. The JMU Board of Visitors will determine the 2014-15 rates during the spring 2014 semester.
Why does JMU offer the Second Year Contract?
- In years prior, a large number of students and their families expresed a desire to "lock-in" a second year on campus during the summer prior to their freshman year.
How many freshmen sign the Second Year Contract?
- Just over 20% of the incoming class chooses to sign this contract each year.
