Room Assignments
Special Requests
In an effort to effectively respond to student requests for special housing modifications or accommodations, the University has created the Special Housing Request Committee. The committee is made up of a group of JMU professionals representing Disability Services, the University Health Center, and the Office of Residence Life.
Deadlines
A fully completed "Certification of Condition or Disability Form" must be received by the Special Housing Request Committee according to the published deadlines for new and returning students in order to process all requests. Returning students need to submit requests no later than one month prior to spring semester's Online Room Selection process. Requests received after these deadlines will be considered on an as available basis.
Students will be notified in writing of the Committee's decision. If a student received a permanent accommodation, they will not need to resubmit any paperwork for future years unless a change is needed to their accommodation.
Documentation
In order to fully evaluate any requests, the Special Housing Request Committee will need documentation of the condition or disability. The "Certificate of Condition or Disability Form" has been developed to assist the student working with their diagnosing or treating professional to prepare the information needed to evaluate the request. The forms must be completed and returned to the Special Housing Request Committee. Documentation should be current and comprehensive and consist of an evaluation by an appropriate professional that describes the current functional impact of the condition or disability as it relates to the housing modification or accommodation requested. The diagnosing / treating professional should not be an immediate family member.
Documentation provided will be used by the Committee to evaluate the request. The Committee will generate a list of potentially reasonable modifications or accommodations based on:
- Preferences of the diagnosing professional
- Potential effectiveness
- Maximum level of integration
- Potential for an undue financial or administrative burden. JMU reserves the right to request additional documentation if the information submitted appears to be outdated, inadequate in scope or content, or does not address the student's current level of functioning or substantiate their need for modifications or accommodations.
A completed Health Record must also be on file in the University Health Center in order to fully evaluate the request.
