Academic Support Resources

First Year Involvement Resource Center (FYI) offers various academic support programs throughout the academic year. Each program is designed to help first year students be successful in the classroom at JMU.

While many of our programs are developed to help first-year students succeed, second year students are also welcome.

Academic Support Instruction

We've developed a results-driven program to help students improve their academic skills in areas such as:

  • Communicating with Professors
  • Goal-Setting
  • Learning Styles
  • Reading Strategies
  • Study Skills
  • Test-Taking Skills
  • Time and Stress Management

Sessions are available for individuals and small groups. Attend just one session or as many as you need!

Call the FYI Center at 540-568-3598 to schedule an appointment.

Academic Mentoring

The Academic Mentoring Program is designed for first year students on academic probation to work with trained upper-class student academic mentors. Mentors will work to identify the needs of each mentee and develop a success plan accordingly. Some topics students may work on:

  • Learning new study skills to positively change their study behavior
  • Recognizing their learning styles
  • Improving time management skills
  • Setting academic and personal goals

Mentors will support, coach, and advise the mentee with any useful information needed to succeed academically. Contact with mentors will occur one on one, in small groups, via email, and/or over the phone.

For more information of the Academic Mentoring Program or to be assigned a mentor, call the FYI Center at 540-568-3598.

F.O.C.U.S. is another great resource to help students succeed academically in their first year of college. F.O.C.U.S. is a FREE program that begins in October. Classes meet one hour per week for five weeks. You won't need to spend a lot of time on class preparation for F.O.C.U.S., because you'll be using what you learn to prepare for all your other classes.

Course Instructors will help students learn how to remain motivated and get the most out of their study time. Class topics include:

  • Setting Goals and Staying Motivated
  • Learning Styles
  • How to read those BIG, FAT textbooks!
  • Lecture Note Taking
  • Time and Stress Management
  • Test-Taking Strategies
  • Study Skills
  • Interacting with Professors

Tutor Connection

FYI can pair students and tutors in specific subjects.

Interested in being a tutor? Tutors are asked to get a document signed by a faculty member or department head stating they have obtained a “B” or better in a class. Download an application.

Please note: FYI staff will refer students to free campus resources as appropriate.  FYI does not coordinate fees or meetings. Details are left to the students to coordinate.

For more information or to be matched up with a tutor call 540-568-3598.
