Requirements

Because of the demanding nature of the Resident Adviser position, the Office of Residence Life has the following requirements for those hired as Resident Advisers:

Hold a "good standing" (e.g. maintain minimum 2.0 cumulative GPA) status as an admitted and enrolled JMU student.

Hold a 2.0 cumulative GPA at the time of application and initial employment. If cum GPA drops below 2.0 after employment, the student will have one semester to bring grades up to the minimum standard. If cum GPA drops below 2.0 between being offered the position and start of employment, the employment will be terminated.

Request approval for any activities requiring significant time commitments prior to participating in them. Approval must be obtained in writing from both the Hall Director and the Area Director before participating in events which include but are not limited to:

* fraternity/sorority rush/pledge/join/membership
executive office in an organization
*student teaching
internships
additional employment on or off campus

* These activities are not approved for RAs in their first semester on the job.

Enroll in no more than 18 undergraduate or 12 graduate credit hours each semester.

RAs in first-year halls:
Plan and implement at least four programs each semester related to the CAMP programming model. RAs receive intensive training about CAMP during the mandatory pre-service training in August.

RAs in Upper-class Halls:
Conduct individual interviews with residents as well as plan and implement at least three programs each semester related to the SYE (Second Year Experience) programing model. All RAs receive intensive training about programming during the mandatory pre-service training in August.

Participate in training opportunities.

  • Attend mandatory meetings
  • Hall staff business meetings (weekly)
  • Staff developmental meetings (every other week)
  • One-on-one meetings with your Hall Director (weekly at the beginning of the year, moves to every other week later in the year)
