More RA FAQs

What does an RA do?

Minimum requirements of the RA job include:

Plan and implement at least four programs each semester.

Participate in PSYC 100, fall semester (two hours per week for seven weeks).

Attend weekly meetings, minimum of two per week--one on one with your hall director, hall staff meeting/staff developmental (aka devo).

Provide hall office coverage during specified times each week.

Assist and be available to residents on your floor or section.

In return, you receive a monthly salary starting at $442.

When do RAs return in August?

Friday, August 12, 2011.

What if I am going to study abroad or student teach during spring semester?

RA employment contracts run through the entire academic year, both fall and spring semesters. You may still apply for the position; however, we request that you be candid about your plans for the spring semester. The application form contains a box where you can indicate the reason you're not available for spring semester. Choosing not to list this information would be an honor code offense.

How does the housing contract tie in with the RA position?

The housing contract is a legally binding agreement between you and JMU. It covers on-campus housing, a meal plan and telecommunications services. Since RAs pay for their own room and board, they must have a signed housing contract on file with ORL.

What is RA training like in August?

RAs return to campus a week and a half before freshmen. Attendance at all training events is mandatory and RAs will not be able to have guests during this time. Training is intense, but valuable. You gain a great deal of information in a short period of time. Training is also a lot of fun. You will begin to bond with your hall and area staff teams and gain friendships to last a lifetime.
