3. I am stuck and cannot activate my JMU e-ID. What should I do?

If your $250.00 tuition deposit has not cleared our system, this would prevent you from activating your e-ID.    If mailing your deposit, please allow up to a week for processing and if paying by credit card or e-check, please allow 2-4 days.  If you have mailed your deposit and wish to check on your deposit status, contact the Orientation office at orientation@jmu.edu or (540) 568-1787. Orientation office hours: Monday - Friday 8 am- 5 pm

To find out your e-ID and to see if your deposit has cleared, you can search for your name on the "JMU People" search.  If you still are experiencing problems, please contact the JMU Computing HelpDesk at (540) 568-3555. Click here for tips on contacting the HelpDesk.

4. How do I know what my JMU electronic ID (e-ID) is?

When you activate your JMU e-ID, the screen after you verify your last name and other personal data will state Welcome your eID.  If you did not see your e-ID when you were setting up your password, your eID is typically 8 characters comprising of 6 characters from your last name, the first character from your first name and the first character from your middle initial (e.g. Elmer J. Fudd would be fuddej).  If someone already has been assigned that e-ID, yours will have a number or numbers in the e-ID (zeros and ones will never be part of your e-ID). To find your e-ID and to see if your deposit has cleared, search for your name on the main JMU web by clicking on "JMU People" or directly at http://www.jmu.edu/jmuweb/search/people.shtml

If you still have questions, please contact the JMU Computing HelpDesk at (540) 568-3555. Click here for tips on contacting the HelpDesk.

5. What is a secret question?

A secret question is a way that you can reset your forgotten JMU electronic ID (e-ID) password without having to contact the JMU Computing HelpDesk.  If you find that you have forgotten your e-ID password, you can use your secret question to reset your password. Your secret question should be something that only you are likely to know the answer to, but the answer should be something that is obvious to you when prompted with your secret question.  A good question might be "What is my grandmother's middle name?" because your roommate and friends will likely not know this information.  You have the opportunity to create a secret question when you initially activate your e-ID.  You can also set a secret question any time after you activate your e-ID:  return to "Activate your JMU e-ID", select option "c: Log into the accounts portal using the form below", click on "e-ID password/Secret Question" in the left hand column, then click the "Change my Secret Question" button.

6. I forgot my e-ID password. What should I do?

If you set a secret question when you activated your e-ID, you may reset a forgotten or locked e-ID password by returning to the "Activate your JMU e-ID" step, and selecting "Reset a forgotten e-ID." If you did not set a secret question and have forgotten your e-ID password, please contact the JMU Computing HelpDesk at (540) 568-3555.

9. I've activated my e-ID, but now when I try to log in to other steps on the Transfer or First-Year One Book Web sites that require my e-ID, my access is denied.

There are few possibilities to consider:

•  Do not add @jmu.edu after your e-ID.

•  Are you using the correct e-ID?

•  Are you using the correct password? If you are unsure use your secret question to reset your password.

•  Do not use the AOL browser, instead open up Internet Explore (IE) or another browser.

•  Try Using IE 6.0 or higher (Windows) or Safari 1.2 or higher (Mac) and make sure you have the correct browser settings.

•  Are you using a program that automatically inserts a password, like "Gator"? If you are, turn off the password program and try again.

•  Is "Spyware" lurking on your computer?  The frequency of "Spyware" being included in free software and offered from web sites is increasing.  Spyware will track your movements, pop up targeted ads, and sometimes report your movements to online web sites.  If you are not sure whether you have Spyware issues, try running Ad-Aware from the Lavasoft site and/or Spybot Search and Destroy software the Spybot Search and Destroy site.

If none of these hints help you then contact the JMU HelpDesk at 540-568-3555.

11.  I'm getting a "blank screen" when trying to log into e-campus. What should I do?

Ensure that your Time/Date settings reflect the actual geographical time zone where you are located and that the time is correct. If you are using an older computer, ensure that you update this to make sure any Daylight Savings Time patches have been applied.

12.  How can I check my JMU e-mail (Webmail) account?

You can check your JMU e-mail by typing in the following URL in your web browser: https://webmail.jmu.edu/. Please be sure to read the HelpDesk's Webmail Frequently Asked Questions. Of particular note, please login to Webmail over the summer and delete unnecessary e-mail delivered to your Inbox and Junk mail folder (even if you forward your JMU e-mail to another account), so when you come to JMU in the fall you won't be over your 10MB e-mail quota. Don't forget to delete all unnecessary e-mail from your inbox, junk mail, sent mail and other folders.  Also, click on "Empty My Trash" to permanently remove deleted e-mail, freeing up quota for uninterrupted delivery of e-mail.  Can't see all your messages? Use the scroll bar on the right to scroll down the current screen and click on the double arrows << or >> at the top to scroll backwards and forwards through your many message screens.

Tips for calling the Computing HelpDesk

When you contact the HelpDesk, you will hear a recorded greeting followed immediately by notifications of any system issues or outages that may exist.  After this, you will hear some instructions that will direct you to press 9 to speak to a HelpDesk representative. The representative will ask for your JMU electronic ID (e-ID) or JMU e-mail address.  At this point explain that you are an incoming student and describe what issues you are experiencing, to include the details of any error messages that you may have received.  Please be sure to give the HelpDesk representative a phone number and email address where you may be contacted should additional follow-up be necessary.
