December Transfer Orientation

December Orientation is designed to prepare you for your transition to campus in January. This day long program (7:30am-5pm) is full of opportunities for you and your family to discover everything JMU offers. It's also when you register for your first semester courses!

 

In preparation for your new life at JMU, make your Orientation reservation now and review the steps you need to complete before December Orientation.

Check In

Check-in for Orientation is 7:30 a.m.-8:15 a.m. in Taylor Hall.

Directions to Orientation Parking

These directions offer the most direct route to Orientation parking:

  • Take exit 247B Northbound or Southbound on Interstate 81 (Highway 33 West).
  • At the first traffic light, make a left onto Cantrell Ave.
  • Proceed through two traffic lights and then take a left into JMU parking lot C4.
  • You will not need a parking permit but are only allowed to park in C4.
  • Taylor Hall is approximately a five minute walk from parking lot C4.

What should I bring to Orientation?

  • All college transcripts and course descriptions (this is very important!).
  • Wear comfortable, casual clothes and shoes because you will be doing some walking.
  • An umbrella (in case of rain), boots (in case of snow) or sunglasses (in case of sun).

    Your Health Record

    Have this completed by a licensed medical provider to be on file in the University Health Center prior to December 16, 2011. For more information visit the Health Center website and click on "forms" or call (540) 568-6177.

    Computing at JMU

    Your eID provides access to dozens of on-line services including MyMadison where you will access your student center and register for classes. To activate your eID Click here. To activate your eID and register for classes you will need to pay your tuition deposit. Your eID also gives you access to your very own JMU email account.

    Please note: Your university financial account will be charged an Orientation fee.

    Inclement Weather Plan

    If there is inclement weather and/or the university is closed due to weather on December 9th, Orientation will take place on December 12th. Additional information will be posted on the Orientation website and emailed to attendees.

    Important Dates

    James Madison University will be closed for winter break beginning on December 22, 2011 and will re-open on January 3, 2012. The first day of spring classes is January 9, 2012.

    University Welcome: Gather valuable information about your Orientation and JMU experience at the invigorating University Welcome!

    9:00am-10:30am

    Students Meet with an ANT & Orientation Peer Adviser: Students will get personalized information and meet other transfer students. You'll also get the inside scoop on academic guidelines like graduation requirements, General Education, and transfer credit evaluations.

    Parents/Family meet with Orientation staff and get your questions answered

    10:40am- 11:10am

    Video: Presentation of essential student services with information about housing, dining, technology and financial issues.

    11:20am- 12:05pm

    Resource Fair

    12:05pm-1:00pm

    Lunch

    1:30pm-5:00pm

    Advising and Registration: Students will meet with an academic advisor in departmental offices and register for courses on-line.
