Writing Prompt

Fast forward to 1787 August Orientation;  you know how we said your PREFACE conversation will illustrate how the college classroom differs from high school? Well here’s where you get to test out the college classroom.  Much like a university classroom, we’re getting you ready for your PREFACE discussions by giving you an assignment.  You will need to arrive to your session and ready to meet a Preface Faculty member who is expecting that you be ready for their “class” by having a written (and we mean typed) response to the prompts below.

  • You will have prepared well for your PREFACE session, and we want to ensure that students do the same. Students will be instructed to write a short essay, about 200 words, exploring the ideas introduced by the readings. The following are some ideas they will be encouraged to explore: What does it mean to 'know' something? How much risk is there in knowing? How much learning does it take to know anything? What frame of mind does it require to learn and know? How might college require a different kind of learning and knowing than you've experienced in the past? Of course, students may explore other ideas related to the articles and 'knowing'.

It is imperative that you complete this assignment and take it with you to your Preface session.  The faculty member facilitating your discussion will expect that you come prepared with this in hand so that it can be used as conversation with the rest of the group. Don’t be that student that’s too cool for school. You would be so uncool!

Mission Statement
