Teer Learning Community

...for students in any major

The Teer Learning Community (TLC) is designed for 20-24 first year students who have an interest in service-learning. At the core of the TLC are 20 hours of community service that you will design with faculty and perform at a local non-profit agency. Your service experience will make a difference in the community while enhancing your classroom learning.

 

Learning Community Students in Shenandoah National Park

Members of the TLC will be enrolled in the same sections of GWRIT 103, GBUS 160, and GCOM 121 (General Education Cluster One courses) while living in Gifford Hall. Through this integrated learning experience, you will enhance your critical thinking, writing, communication, and technology skills while satisfying General Education Cluster One requirements. You will also quickly get to know your fellow students and faculty, forming a small and supportive community of learners.

The Teer Learning Community is named after Dr. Harold B. Teer, a retired JMU Marketing professor. Dr. Teer retired in 2001 after 15 years on the JMU faculty. He was the first recipient of the James Madison Distinguished Faculty Award, received the Carl Harter Distinguished Teaching Award, and was named the Outstanding Direct Marketing Educator of the Year by the Direct Marketing Educational Foundation.
