Teer Learning Community...for students in any majorThe Teer Learning Community (TLC) is designed for 20-24 first year students who have an interest in service-learning. At the core of the TLC are 20 hours of community service that you will design with faculty and perform at a local non-profit agency. Your service experience will make a difference in the community while enhancing your classroom learning.

Members of the TLC will be enrolled in the same sections of GWRIT 103, GBUS 160, and GCOM 121 (General Education Cluster One courses) while living in Gifford Hall. Through this integrated learning experience, you will enhance your critical thinking, writing, communication, and technology skills while satisfying General Education Cluster One requirements. You will also quickly get to know your fellow students and faculty, forming a small and supportive community of learners.
If you are applying for membership in the Teer Learning Community, please pay special attention to the following:
- Freshmen will complete the "GenEd Form" online (in Step 5 of the One Book process). If you would like to be a member of the Teer Learning Community, please select GBUS 160 and GCOM 121 when you complete the "GenEd Form" online.
- Be aware that GWRIT 103, GBUS 160, and GCOM 121 are co-requisites for members of the Teer Learning Community. That means that you must take them all together, at the same time. Each of these courses is worth 3 credit hours (for a total of 9 credit hours). If you need to drop one of these courses, you will be required to drop them all.
- Students wishing to be in the Teer Learning Community must enroll in the Teer Learning Community section of GWRIT 103 even if they have an exemption from or credit for GWRIT 103 due to AP or IB scores or dual enrollment. The letter grade students earn in the course will replace students' AP, IB or dual enrollment credit for GWRIT 103 on the students' transcripts.
- If you have taken the AP English exam and choose to become a member of the Teer Learning Community, you will be required to take GWRIT 103 regardless of your AP English exam score. You will not receive credit for GWRIT 103 regardless of your AP English exam score. Please see http://www.jmu.edu/admissions/SATII.shtml for more information on AP English credit at JMU.
- If you have taken the Higher-Level International Baccalaureate English A exam and choose to become a member of the Teer Learning Community, you will be required to take GWRIT 103 regardless of your IB English score. You will not receive credit for GWRIT 103 regardless of your IB score. Please see http://www.jmu.edu/admissions/SATII.shtml for more information on IB English credit at JMU.
- If you are taking an English course at another university, either through dual enrollment or as a transfer course and choose to become a member of the Teer Learning Community, you will still be required to take GWRIT 103 for credit. You will not receive credit equivalent to GWRIT 103 for any dual enrollment or transfer course, which may mean that you will not receive any credit at JMU for dual enrollment or transfer English courses you have taken. Please see http://www.jmu.edu/admissions/SATII.shtml for more information on Dual Enrollment or Transfer Course English credit at JMU.
