FROG FAQs

What are you looking for in a FROG applicant?

We are looking for a diverse group of applicants who are committed to making a difference in the lives of first year students at JMU and who are open to learning and growing through the experience. We encourage applicants of all backgrounds, majors, involvements and interests. You do not need previous experience to apply. You just need the appropriate commitment and motivation.

I've heard that FROGs can't work at or train for other jobs during FROG training and 1787. Tell me more about that.

Due to intensive FROG responsibilities between the dates of August 20 - 27, 2006, FROGs are unable to work at or train for another job during that time. FROGs typically work 12-14 hour days during this time period. Please let us know if you have questions about this.

If I am selected to be a FROG, can I miss part of FROG training or 1787 in order to attend a family event or to honor another personal commitment?

No, you would not be able to miss any part of FROG training or 1787. All aspects of training are very important in preparing FROGs for 1787. In turn, being present for all aspects of 1787 is very important in helping freshmen have a smooth transition to JMU.

I'm living off-campus in fall 2006. Is there anything I should know?

FROGs who will be living off-campus in fall 2006 are responsible for making their own arrangements to move into their fall housing assignment by August 20th. You will need to move into your fall housing assignment on or before August 20th in order to begin training for 1787 at 4:00pm on August 20th.

I'm living on-campus in fall 2006. Is there anything I should know?

The Orientation Office will make arrangements for FROGs who are living on-campus in fall 2006. If you are selected to be a FROG, we will notify you as to when you will be able to move into your permanent room on-campus on Sunday, August 20th.

Can I apply to be a FROG if I am studying abroad in spring 2006?

No. In order to maintain a fair and consistent selection process, we cannot accept applications from students who will not be present to participate in the spring interview process. In addition, all FROGs are required to participate in training activities during the spring semester. Students who are studying abroad would not be able to participate in these important training activities.

Can I study abroad in fall 2006 if I am a FROG?

No. In order to fulfill their responsibilities, FROGs are expected to be full-time JMU students in Harrisonburg during the fall semester.

How many FROGs do you select?

About 240 FROGs are selected, along with a pool of alternates.

How many people typically apply to be FROGs?

In 2005, we received over 400 applications for the 240 FROG positions. We expect to receive the same amount of applications in 2006. It is a competitive process.

When will applications be available?

February 8, 2006

When are applications due?

March 2, 2006 (applications must be dropped off in person no later than 5 p.m. on March 2; applications received at or after 5 p.m. on March 2 may not be considered).

Is there a minimum GPA requirement?

A minimum GPA of 2.0 is preferred. Please let us know if this is a concern for you. If your GPA is below a 2.0, we ask that you attach an explanation to your application.

Do FROGs get paid?

No, FROGs do not get paid. FROGs are volunteers. FROGs do receive two really great FROG t-shirts. FROGs also receive meals during training and orientation between the dates of August 20-August 25. FROGs do not receive meals from the Orientation Office on August 26 or August 27 (upperclass meal plans are in effect on these dates).
