Federalist 10 Facilitator Guide

Message to facilitators | Context and Resources | Chronology | Facilitating your Discussion | Facilitation FAQs | Fed. 10 Booklet

The purpose of First-Year Reading is to engage students intellectually in a common experience.

First Year Reading Goals

  1. Begin to engage students intellectually and purposefully in common experiences.
  1. Help students make connections with faculty, staff, and peers within and outside of the formal instructional setting.
  2. Encourage students to make an enduring commitment to personal, social, and civic growth.
  3. Provide a selection of media that highlights a provocative theme for exploration by the academic community.

There are certainly numerous approaches that one can take in facilitating discussions with first-year students about Federalist 10. Because there is such a rich variety among the First Year Reading facilitators in both expertise and experience, the Facilitator Guide has been designed to reflect that variety.  As such, we do not expect that you will use every suggestion included here; please feel free to use only those approaches to discussion that suit your individual personality and comfort level.

Thank you to the First Year Reading Selection Committee for selecting James Madison's Federalist 10 from the many choices out there:
