James Madison University Women's Club NEWSLETTER

Celebrating fifty-five years of service to our university

Issue No. 1 Fall 2003

President's Welcome

When I last looked at my calendar it was June and I was looking forward to a peaceful, warm summer. The next thing I know - it's the end of September and it's 39 at night! Where does the time go?

Between getting your children off to school, your spouses off to work, maintaining your household and your career, and just trying to get five minutes alone in the bathtub, you've probably asked yourselves the same question.

If you're like me, I often feel that I'm being pulled in so many different directions that I sometimes forget to take care of myself. Ask yourself, what have I done recently that was just for me? If you're having a hard time coming up with an answer...maybe you've been neglecting a major part of your life - YOU!

So what can you do about it? Make a list of the things you love to do and make a commitment to do one of them each day. These could range from walking in the park; having a banana split; planting flowers in your garden; dancing wildly to your favorite song; to buying that sweater you so desperately want, but don't really need or taking a drive to the mountains and listening to the waterfalls. Whatever it is, do it for you!

Another great way to treat yourself is to spend time with friends. I hope that the Women's Club can provide that sense of fun and relaxation for you. I welcome all of you to the club and look forward to spending time with each of you. We have exciting events coming up so keep your eyes and ears open for announcements. Thank you.

Take care of yourself,

Tiffany Newbold
President 2003-2004

Why join the JMU Women's Club?

Service, Collegial Spirit - Honorary president and JMU first lady responds

The JMU Women's Club is extremely important to James Madison University on two levels, with both of them making a distinctive contribution to the University Community. First, the Women's Club plays a key role in developing the collegial spirit that is essential to the well being of any great university. The Women's Club provides a wide range of opportunities for members of the JMU Community to interact on a social basis and to share similar interests in many areas. As well as sponsoring a multitude of social activities at JMU, the Women's Club also has a history of involvement in community service programs and in raising scholarship funds for deserving students. A new community service group is being formed this year to offer those members unable to make a long-term commitment to contribute to specific projects on a one time basis. The sense of community at JMU has been greatly enhanced by the presence of the Women's Club and the University and local communities have also both benefited tremendously from the efforts and dedication of club members. I urge you to consider taking advantage of the many opportunities offered by the JMU Women's Club.

Erin's Essay

The Edith Carrier Scholarship is awarded each spring to a JMU student. The Winner is selected based on an essay submitted to the JMU Women's Club. A committee then reviews the essay. Our most recent winner of the $1,000 scholarship is Ms. Erin D. McHardy of Harrisonburg, Virginia. Her winning essay follows for your interest.

What the JMU community means to me and my family

For the past five years I have lived in wonderful Harrisonburg, Virginia. Through these past years I have seen how James Madison University affects this town, my family and myself. Because Harrisonburg is what some call a "college town" its community seems to often revolve around the University. While some "townies" dislike that about JMU the community, I have grown to love the way the University affects most things in this town. That is a big reason why I chose to come to JMU rather than any other college.

Since my freshmen year in high school I have been visiting JMU's campus often. After school I would usually walk to my father's office for a ride home. Besides going to visit my dad, my school took many field trips to the University. In my chemistry class we visited JMU's chemistry department to see machines that no high school could afford. Then for my art classes we often visited both the Zirkle House and the Sawhill Gallery. Once a year the art department would help put on an all day art workshop called May Day. At the workshops select students could work closely with JMU's graduate students in particular concentrations of art. These workshops really affected me because it made me see how much graduate art students love art and how they love being at JMU taking art. I knew then that I too wanted to be an art major at JMU.

After many stressful months in my senior year, I finally found out that I had been accepted to JMU and to the art department. I was ecstatic because JMU was my first choice. As my senior year came to an end, JMU was more and more a part of my life. My after prom was in UREC and then in June my graduation was in the Convocation Center. Having JMU and the JMU community here was such a benefit throughout my high school years. Without the college being so close and inviting I do not think I would have experienced such new and interesting things.

When August 2002 finally rolled around I was more than ready to move into my new home on JMU's campus. When most people found out that I was a "townie" and that my father worked here at JMU many were surprised that I chose to come here. Then they would ask me the same two questions: "Do you live at home?" and "So, you go here for free since your dad works here?" To both of these questions I answer no. While it would be cheaper to live at home, I felt that I would be missing out on part of the college and dorm life experience if I lived at home. So I made a deal with my parents, they would pay tuition, while I would pay room and board. I wanted to live on campus that badly, so I decided to pay the few thousand dollars a year. So, besides going to school full time, I have been working at two jobs to help pay for my end of the cost. While at times it has been stressful managing work and school, I feel like I have gained a lot of responsibility and matured a lot since last year.

When answering the latter of the questions many people were surprised to find out I do not go to school for free. Then they wonder why I would want to go here since my parents are so close. I tell them, I have seen how great JMU is through past visits to the University, I have seen how my upper classmen friends love the school and I have seen my father enjoy working for the University. How could I not want to go to college here? While most students would think it would be a burden to have their father on the same campus as them, I enjoy it. He helps me out with questions I have about the school and we both teach each other new stuff about the University. I am looking forward to the next three years here at JMU with the great community of the school and my father right here on campus.
