It was the pleasure of
the JMU Students for a Free Tibet to take part in a unique
cultural exchange on Monday, October 18, 1999, when it hosted the
distinguished Nuns of the Khachoe Ghakyil Nunnery. These Tibetan
Buddhist nuns, having fled from Tibet, now represent their exiled
religious community in Kathmandu, Nepal by travelling around the
world to perform traditional song and dance. Like last November's
performance by the monks of the Drepung Loseling Monastery, this
night proved to be a vivid and moving experience.
The JMU Students for a Free Tibet extended an open invitation to
everyone to attend this rare event. The dance and music program,
arranged during Homecoming Week to highlight our university's
renewed commitment to multicultural respect, was presented in
Wilson Hall at 8:30 PM on Monday, October 18, completely free of
charge. We thank everyone who took part in this experience, as
this was one of the last times the nuns were able to present
their program in the United States before returning home. Many
students were attracted by this oppurtunity, as it brought to
life themes taught in anthropology, sociology, philosophy,
religion, political science, art, dance, and music courses.
