Chinese Democracy Activist
Liu Nianchun
March 22, 2000
Students
for a Free Tibet, Amnesty International, and Catholic Campus
Ministries brought Mr. Liu Nianchun to James Madison University.
Mr. Liu is considered by many activists to be one of the founding
leaders of China's modern democracy movement. The event was free
of charge.
Liu Nianchun, veteran democracy and labor activist, has been
courageous in his struggle for human rights and democracy in
China. In an atmosphere where it is often dangerous to hold a
dissenting view, Mr. Liu has been steadfast in his commitment to
democracy and workers rights for over 20 years and through two
prison terms. Active in both the Democracy Wall Movement in the
1970s and the Tiananmen Square Movement, Liu Nianchun has
inspired thousands with his work.
Mr. Liu's strength and experience in China's democratic movement
has been as an organizer - mobilizing people to struggle for
democracy. Mr. Liu spoke about organizing for human rights,
workers rights, and democracy in China under very difficult
conditions. He also addressed the current human rights situation
in China and how people in the U.S. can support the international
human rights movement.
Both faculty and students were invited to come listen and
participate in a discussion with Mr. Liu Nianchun. The event
proved to be an eye-opening experience for faculty and students
alike. This event followed in a series of popular cultural and
intellectual events sponsored by Students for a Free Tibet.

Members of Students for a Free Tibet participated
in a discussion
with Mr. Liu Nianchun at a reception before the event later that
evening.
