4. In Tibet today, there is no freedom of speech, religion, or press, and arbitrary arrests continue. There are currently over 700 political prisoners in Tibet, including a young Fulbright scholar named Ngawang Choephel. The Panchen Lama (the second most important religious figure in Tibet) disappeared in 1995 without a trace, he was only six years old. It is presumed that he is either dead or being held by Chinese authorities.
