In May, 1998, from the 13 to the 28th, for the fifth year, a group from James MadisonUniversity will travel to the former USSR and Romania to study the transformation of post-communist society. This work will apply toward 3 hours of academic credit.
The group will first travel to Bucharest and will meet with students and faculty of the Romanian American University, our sponsor in Romania. We will spend two days at the RAU and, later, will travel into Transylvania. In Romania, we will visit last, Sibiu, Brasov, and Curtea de Arges, one of the nation's most important and historic monasteries.
From Romania, the group will travel by chartered bus to Chisinau, capital of the Moldova, formerly the Moldavian Soviet Socialist Republic. In Moldova, the group will be sponsored by Dr. Vasile Nedelciuc, a member of the Moldovan Parliament and the in-country coordinator for JMU's Moldovan programs. While in Moldova, the group will meet with numerous officials and visit historic sites and villages in this newly independent nation.
We will also go to Tiraspol, capital of the "Dniester Republic", a Russian enclave in what was once part of the Ukraine. This area proclaims itself as "an embryo of a future USSR" and statues of Lenin and other Sovietsymbols are common place. While in Tiraspol, the group will meet with Cossacks and members of the Afghan veterans group.
In Moldova, we will stay in the homes of local families, an important experience that will give group members an opportunity to develop a greater understanding of the special circumstances of life in the former USSR.
