SPEAKERS

John B. Molidor, Ph.D. comes to us from Michigan State University/College of Human Medicine where he is a Professor and an Assistant Dean and also serves as the CEO and President of Michigan State University/Flint Area Medical Education (a non-profit, educational corporation that brings together the medical school and the three Flint area teaching hospitals). But more importantly, he says, is that he grew up as one of 10 children where he learned first-hand about how one person can still make a difference in the lives of others.  Dr. Molidor is an honorary member of AED (Michigan Gamma Chapter at MichiganStateUniversity) and has conducted workshops at numerous undergraduate institutions, organizations, and medical schools throughout the country. 

 Chad M. Coe is the 2004 Recipient of Alpha Epsilon Delta's Virgil Tweedie Scholarship. Chad graduated from the Lyman Briggs School of Science at MichiganStateUniversity in 2004 and is a second year medical student at Wayne State University School of Medicine.  During his tenure at MSU, Chad was active in his AED Chapter Michigan Gamma and served on the chapter's Public Relations Board for four years serving as the Director for the last two years.  Through this position, he redesigned and maintained the chapter web site, advertised the organization's meetings and events, and help to plan community service projects.  As a medical student, Chad is equally involved giving of his time and talents to the school and the community.

 G. Scott Morris is founder and Executive Director of the Church Health Center (CHC), in Memphis, TN. The CHC opened in 1987 to provide primary health care to low-income uninsured working people in Memphis.  The CHC, an ecumenical health care ministry supported by the faith and medical communities, has over 35,000 patients of record.  In January of 2000, the CHC opened the Hope & HealingCenter where the best disease prevention efforts of medicine are combined with the pastoral and spiritual care of the faith community. 

 Dr. Morris has a Master of Divinity degree from YaleUniversity, and an M.D. from EmoryUniversity.  He is a board certified family practice physician and an ordained United Methodist minister.

  This activity is designed to give you a small "taste" of the wide variety of health professions.  Each session will last 30 minutes, and there will be 10 minutes in between to "switch" classes.  Each will be presented three times, so choose the three you wish to attend.  Sessions will be filled on a first-come-first-served basis.    Read the description of each session and make your choices!

 Osteopathic Medicine                                                                                                               Grand Ballroom A

Osteopathic medicine is a distinctive form of medical practice that provides all of the benefits of modern medicine including prescription drugs, surgery, and the use of technology to diagnose disease and evaluate injury, as well as the added benefit of hands-on diagnosis and treatment through a system of therapy known as osteopathic manipulative medicine. Emphasizes helping each person achieve a high level of wellness by focusing on health education, injury prevention and disease prevention, osteopathic physicians, (D.O.s) consider the impact that lifestyle and community have on health, and work to erase barriers to good health. From their first days of med school, D.O.s are trained to look at the whole person from, which means they see each person as more than just a collection of body parts that may become injured or diseased.  D.O.s learn how to integrate the patient into the health care process as a partner.  In this session, osteopathic student doctors will be conducting case studies to demonstrate this holistic approach to medicine.

 Optometry                                                                                                                                Grand Ballroom C

In this session, you will have the opportunity to:  1)view the retina, optic nerve head and other posterior eye structures as well as view various eye pathology; 2) via a slit lamp bio-microscope, observe the various eye structures (cornea, crystalline lens, iris and lids) via high magnification; 3)  observe on video various types of specialty contact lens fits including bifocal, corneal reshaping designs and astigmatic-correcting lenses, and 4) learn more about the profession of optometry and the process of applying to Colleges of Optometry.

In the practice of Podiatric Medicine, every day is varied, and every patient presents a new and different challenge.  During this interactive session, participating students will learn or practice suturing skills and learn foot casting techniques that can improve function and decrease pain. With the assistance of a number of new practitioners and local podiatric medical residents, students will have a hands-on opportunity to sample some of the various skills that are required for a career in podiatric medicine and find out more about this growing and exciting profession.   Limit 20 students per session.

 Prosthetics and Orthotics                                                                                                          Grand Ballroom EF     

This session will introduce you to the field of Orthotics and Prosthetics.  You will develop an understanding of what it means to be a professional who works with the design and management of devices that restore function for the rehabilitating patient.  We will discuss the pathways of education to becoming a credentialed practitioner.  We will discuss orthoses such as for scoliosis, cerebral palsy, and stroke patients, as well as the latest designs in prosthetics and myoelectrics.  You will have the opportunity to have a hands-on experience with the latest technology related to the field of Orthotics and Prosthetics.

 Public Health                                                                                                                           Regency B

Hand washing is the single most effective intervention to prevent the spread of communicable diseases.  Research indicates that most people don't wash their hands correctly or frequently enough.  One reason may be that they don't know the proper procedure for washing their hands.

 Glo Germ™ products demonstrate germ communication, cross-contamination, effectiveness of sanitary practices, and more!   We'll illuminate the weaknesses in your hand washing techniques with Glo Germ™ and help you protect your self and others!  The liquid or gel and the powder contain the plastic simulated germs, and the lamp illuminates them to test the effectiveness of your hand washing practices.

A Chiropractor is a primary care physician treating patients through natural methods without the use of drugs or surgery.  In this session, Dr. Jason Strotheide will demonstrate a cutting-edge chiropractic technology called Pro-Adjuster.  Pro-Adjuster is a sophisticated technical instrument used by doctors for spinal analysis and adjustment.  This system uses an advanced software package designed to assist the doctor in locating and correcting spinal problems.

 American Cancer Society                                                                                                                 Regency A

Learn how you can join the American Cancer Society, the nation's leading voluntary health organization, in the fight against cancer on your campus and in your community.  In fact, over the past 60 years, Society-funded research has played a role in a majority of the critical advances against the disease.  Volunteers of the American Cancer Society can provide rides to patients' treatments, educate communities on how to reduce lifetime cancer risk, give hope to those battling cancer, raise funds for cancer research and much more.  This session will give you the information you need to bring the fight against cancer to your campus with the Relay For Life event, the Colleges Against Cancer program and many more opportunities.

Writing your Personal Statement                                                                        Grand Ballroom A        

Your personal statement for your application to a health professions school is a critical component of your application that describes who you are and the experiences and events that shaped your personality, values, and goals.  This interactive, hand-on workshop will take you step-by-step through the process of creating a personal statement from getting ready to write the first draft to polishing your final statement.  You will compile a personal marketing inventory, examine your credentials from the point of view of an Admissions Committee and read and critique some statements written by others.  

    Presented by:  Debra Kirchhof-Glazier, Ph.D., Professor of Biology, JuniataCollege

    Debra Kirchhof-Glazier received her B.S. in Biology from LebanonValleyCollege and her Ph.D. in Physiology from CornellUniversity.  At JuniataCollege, she is a Professor of Biology, Director of the Health Professions Program and faculty advisor to the Juniata chapter of HOSA (Health Occupations Students of America). 

     Deb is an active member of the National Association of Advisors for the Health Professions (NAAHP) and the Northeast Association of Advisors for the Health Professions.  She is a contributor for the NAAHP Medical Professions Admissions Guide and has published articles in their journal, The Advisor, on naturopathic medicine and on a summer reading program to enhance verbal scores on admission exams.

     In the Fall of 2002 Deb spent a sabbatical studying complementary and alternative medicine at the University of Bridgeport College of Naturopathic Medicine and Acupuncture Institute.  She was a founding member of the Huntingdon Health and Wellness Association and serves as the editor for their monthly newspaper column, The Natural Connection.

     Her awards include Woman of the Year at JuniataCollege, the Lindback Award for Distinguished Teaching, Outstanding Collegiate HOSA Advisor, and Outstanding Faculty Member of the Year for 2005.

 

Financial Planning for Health Professions Schools                                          Grand Ballroom B 

Given the high cost of a health professions education, it is essential that students integrate financial and career planning. This session will treat everyday financial issues, such as living on a budget and protecting your credit score, and then move on to a description of how financial aid works for health professions students.  The session will conclude with information about how young health professionals manage educational debt and the key elements of effective financial planning. 

    Presented by:  Daniel Burr, Ph.D., Assistant Dean for Student Financial Planning, University of CincinnatiCollege of Medicine

    Daniel A. Burr is the Assistant Dean for Student Financial Planning at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine.  In addition to directing the College of Medicine financial aid program, he coordinates the freshman orientation program, helps seniors prepare their residency applications, and teaches in the Medical Ethics and Business of Medicine courses.  Dr. Burr is the course director for a senior elective in Medicine and Literature.

    Before coming to the University of Cincinnati Dr. Burr was the Associate Dean for Admissions at the Loyola University Stritch School of Medicine in Chicago and a prehealth advisor at the University of Notre Dame. Dr. Burr has been active in the Group on Student Affairs of the Association of American Medical Colleges. He received a B.A. degree in English from CarrollCollege in Helena, Montana, his home town, and M.A. and Ph.D. degrees in English from the University of Notre Dame.

 

Demystifying the Interview                                                                           Grand Ballroom D

Applications have been completed, exams taken and scores received, letters of recommendation have been written in support of your application, and everything has been reviewed by the admissions committee.  What comes next?  The interview!  Professional school interviews are a key component in the application process.  It is an opportunity for the school to gather additional information about you as well as your opportunity to learn more about the school.  What is the interviewer trying to assess?  How can you prepare for this phase of the process?  This session will help you understand the interview process and what you can do to prepare for this important day in the application process.

    Donald L. Batisky is the Associate Dean of Admissions and an Associate Professor of Clinical Pediatrics at The Ohio State University College of Medicine and is a physician with an academic practice in pediatric nephrology based at Columbus Children's Hospital.  Dr. Batisky received his BA Chemistry degree from HiramCollege and his MD degree from the Medical College of Ohio (renamed in 2005 to Medical University of Ohio).  After completing a Pediatric Residency at OhioState and Columbus's Children's Hospital, Dr. Batisky completed a Pediatric Nephrology Fellowship at the University of Tennessee and LeBonheur Children's Hospital. From 1997-1999, Dr. Batisky served as the Associate Dean of Admissions at Medical College of Ohio and was also the Director of the Pediatric Residency program.

The NEW Computer-based MCAT                                                                           Regency A      

The Medical College Admission Test (MCAT) is a standardized, multiple-choice examination designed to assess problem solving, critical thinking, and writing skills in addition to the examinee's knowledge of science concepts and principles prerequisite to the study of medicine. In this session, Dr. Julian will present both a general MCAT update and specific information about the upcoming transition of the MCAT to computer.

     Presented by:  Ms. Ellen Julian, Ph. D., Associate VP and Director of the MedicalCollege Admission Test, Association of American Medical Colleges

    Ellen Julian is Associate Vice President of the Association of American Medical Colleges and has been Director of the Medical College Admission Test since 1997.  Dr. Julian's background is in educational measurement and testing, with a PhD from FloridaStateUniversity in 1985.  Her Master's degree, also from FSU, was in Educational Research Design and Statistics and her Bachelor's degree in Psychology was from Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas.

     Dr. Julian's formative years were spent at the National Board of Medical Examiners, trying to figure out how to score their patient simulations, both the computerized ones that are now part of Step III and the ones using standardized patients, which are now part of Step II.  She served as psychometrician for a number of the NBME's client examinations.

     From 1992 to 1997, she was psychometrician for the National Council of State Boards of Nursing.  The National Council's 1994 transition of the 200,000 tests-per-year NCLEX from paper-and-pencil to computerized adaptive testing helped shape the computer-based testing industry of today.
