SIFE Team's First Annual Competition a Success
On March 29th, 2004 the JMU SIFE team (Students in Free Enterprise) competed in the regional S.I.F.E. competition, this year hosted by Unilever, at the Marriott Crystal Gateway in Washington D.C. The S.I.F.E. team returned to JMU with a trophy for Rookie of the Year and another trophy for Second Runner Up. The SIFE competition team members that attended were: Jordan Teel, December Lee, Diane Luckring, Kim Tashner, Robert Freeman, Jeff Shuster, Matt Coffey, Andrew Schroeder, Jorge Hendrickson and advisor Christina Roeder.
In an effort to teach free enterprise to JMU students and the Harrisonburg community, the SIFE team organized projects on the topics of personal and financial success skills, entrepreneurship, business ethics, and the global market economy. The SIFE team was established in December 2003 yet remarkably, the team completed nine projects in just nine short weeks. Many weeks were spent putting together an annual report for the judges, organizing apparel, coordinating projects, and putting together a presentation for the upcoming competition.
During this trip to Washington D.C. for the 2004 SIFE regional competition, SIFE teams from all over the eastern region presented their accomplishments to groups of several judges which included representatives and CEOs from companies like Walgreens, Fannie Mae, CVS, Office Depot, and many others. In front of a panel of twelve judges, the JMU SIFE team successfully exhibited all that was accomplished through their nine projects and how the results of those projects improved the community. The result…two trophies! Some students even left the competition with possible job offers!
The team has already begun to work on projects to be presented at next year’s regional competition and has plans to take home the First Place trophy next year!
