Good Chemistry: Mixing Art and Science — Dr. Brian Augustine, a JMU associate professor of chemistry, may now add "artist" to his vita: His entry in the Materials Research Society's 2006 "Science as Art" Competition, "Augustine Microfluidic," was one of 50 works selected to be displayed at the society's 2006 Spring Meeting April 17-21 at the Moscone West Marriott in San Francisco, Calif. Six of the 50 works, selected from 250 entries, will receive cash awards at the meeting. Augustine's image is a microfluidic structure fabricated in poly(methylmethacrylate) (PMMA) using hot embossing from a silicon master, and was created using atomic-force micrsocopy at JMU. At the meeting, Augustine will make an oral presentation, "The Nanoscience Undergraduate Education Program at James Madison University" (co-authors: Drs. Barbara Reisner and Kevin Caran, JMU department of chemistry). The MRS is the world's premier scientific and technical society that showcases interdisciplinary research in chemistry, physics, biology, engineering and medicine.
