Dr. Clare Croft is visiting Forbes this week as a School of Theatre and Dance Guest Artist. An Assistant Professor of Dance at the University of Michigan, Dr. Croft is an award- winning scholar in the fields of dance history, performance studies, and critical race and sexuality studies. She is also both a dance dramaturg and a dance critic, and her two-day residency at JMU will focus on 1) dance dramaturgy (in support of the fall Dramaturgy course as well as new dramaturgy partnerships and initiatives across STAD) as well as 2) writing about performance, including theatre and dance criticism and movement analysis.  Her residency will enable students a chance to strengthen their writing skills through classroom and rehearsal visits, as well as provide an opportunity for additional mentorship for all who hold movement (MT, dance, and theatre) central to their arts-practices.  Dr. Croft will also discuss her recently published book, Dancers as Diplomats: American Choreography in Cultural Exchange (Oxford University Press, 2015).
