Family Weekend at UREC


 

JMU families, join UREC for an adventure this family weekend! 

Family Weekend Hike

Saturday, Oct. 1 | 8 a.m. until noon | meet at UREC atrium | includes leaders, transportation and snacks | dress in layers and wear closed toed shoes, and a rain jacket is always a good idea | please
bring a small backpack, 2 liters of water, sunblock and a hat | $25 per person

We will meet at UREC then travel to the border of West Virginia for a scenic hike to the historic High Knob fire tower. This moderate 2 mile round-trip trail hike includes some uphill hiking. Your efforts will be rewarded with a 360-degree view of the Allegheny and Blue Ridge mountains from the top of a fire tower. Students can register themselves and their families through the JMU Ticket Office at www.jmutickets.com or (540) 568-3853. Family Weekend Downtown Bike Ride

Saturday, Oct. 1 | 10 a.m. until noon | meet at UREC | includes leaders and adult sized bikes only | Helmets (provided) required | $10 per person

We will meet at UREC then ride a short distance to the Harrisonburg Farmers’ Market where you can purchase great local breakfast items. After enjoying the Farmers’ Market, you are welcome to explore downtown before riding back as a group to UREC. Students can register themselves and their families through the JMU Ticket Office at www.jmutickets.com or (540) 568-3853. Family Weekend Canoe

Saturday, Oct. 1 | 8 a.m. until noon | meet at UREC atrium | includes the equipment, leaders, transportation and snacks | dress in layers in clothes than can get wet (just in case) and wear shoes with straps that can get wet (no flip-flops) | please bring a small backpack, 2 liters of water, sunblock and a hat | $20 per person

Prerequisite: Swimming ability. Come out and enjoy the beauty of the valley as we canoe on the South Fork of the Shenandoah River. Paddle “Lake Shenandoah,” a flat-water-section in northeastern Rockingham County about 30 minutes from JMU. Basic canoeing and safety instruction will be covered. All you need to bring are your paddling clothes and shoes. Open Climbing

Saturday, Oct. 1 | 2 p.m. until 6 p.m. | Free

No registration necessary. If you want to add a challenge to your Family Weekend, then look no further. Parents, siblings and friends are welcome to join us for an afternoon of fun in UREC’s brand new Adventure Center, complete with a freestanding climbing tower and expansive bouldering wall. We will cover all you need to know for your first climb. Contact UREC's Assistant Director for Adventure & TEAM Programs with questions.

UREC and University Park Family Hours

6 p.m. Friday, Sep. 30 until 6 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 2 | UREC Family & Guest Policies | UREC Hours | UPARK Hours

No registration necessary. Family hours start on Friday at 6:00 pm and end Sunday 6:00pm at University Recreation facilities (make sure to check our facility hours before visiting!). All break hours, including summer, are family hours. During family hours only, immediate family are free of charge. Immediate family for JMU faculty, staff, and students include: spouse, dependents (children, foster children, step children), siblings, parents, grandparents, and grandchildren. Proof of relationship to host: birth certificate, driver's license, or other forms of legal identification. Children 15 and under may only use facilities during family hours and must remain in the company of an adult or their host at all times. They may participate in any area except for programs requiring registration (i.e. Intramural Sports, Group Exercise classes). Children under the age of 14 are not permitted in the Fitness Center and Cardio Deck (14 and 15 year olds must remain in the company of their host at all times in these areas). Children 16 and over must enter with their host but the two do not have to remain in the same area of the facility during the visit.
