Dr. Mark Piper, Associate Professor of Philosophy at JMU, is featured in a new volume of collected essays on Philosophers in the Classroom by Hackett Publishing. Piper's article probes the connection between "Critical Thinking and Empowerment" and makes a case for engaged learning in the philosophy classroom that cultivates free and empowered citizens.

Piper has been awarded both the JMU School of Liberal Arts Alumni Legacy Award (2016) and the JMU College of Arts and Letters Harter Distinguished Teaching Award (2015) for his contributions toward engaged learning and student impact.
