The 2014-15 James Madison University Student Handbook is now available exclusively online at www.jmu.edu/handbook.

It is the responsibility of every student to know and follow the policies outlined in the JMU Student Handbook along with federal, state, and local laws. The JMU Student Handbook also outlines the Accountability Process – the process used to resolve allegations of student misconduct, as well as the rights of a student throughout the Accountability Process.

Substantive changes have been made to the Student Handbook for the 2014-15 Academic Year. These changes include:

  • Terminology used by the Office of Student Accountability and Restorative Practices (formerly the Office of Judicial Affairs)

  • A revision of how the Accountability Process is explained in the Student Handbook, based on student feedback

  • The creation of a separate and distinct Sexual Misconduct Accountability Process to address allegations of Sexual Misconduct

  • The creation of a Sexual Misconduct policy that more clearly encompasses a large spectrum of behavior, including sexual assault, non-consensual sexual contact, sexual exploitation, sexual harassment, and relational violence

  • Substantive revisions of university policies, including:

    • J38-101 Alcohol

    • J38-102 Drugs

    • J12-100 Falsification of Information

    • J16-100 Harassment and/or Bullying

    • J17-100 Hazing

    • J18-100 Interference with the Accountability, Honor Council, or Title IX Process

    • J39-100 Theft

    • The Enlightened Citizen Amnesty Process
