AWARDS

Dr. JoAnne Brewster (Professor, Psychology) received a Certificate of Appreciation from the International Association of Chiefs of Police Psychological Services Section Oct. 14, 2007, "for her efforts to define the domains and proficiencies of police psychology while serving as a charter member of the Joint Committee on Police Psychology Competencies."

Dr. Jessica Irons (Assistant Professor, Psychology) received the Wilbert J. McKeachie Graduate Student Teaching Excellence Award, Division 2 of the American Psychological Association.

Dr. Tracy Zinn (Assistant Professor, Psychology) received the 2007 Early Career Award from the Society for the Teaching of Psychology, Division 2 of the American Psychological Association.

GRANTS

Dr. Benjamin A. DeGraff (Professor Emeritus, Chemistry) received $20,000 from the Camille and Henry Dreyfus Foundation to train students in synthesis, molecular structure determination using multiple techniques and evaluation of reporter characteristics using modern photophysics as part of a senior scientist mentoring program.

Dr. Steven W. Evans (Director, Alvin V. Baird Attention and Learning Disabilities Center; Professor, Psychology) received $2,000 from Eli Lilly & Co. and $1,000 from Shire Pharmaceuticals Inc. to organize Raising the Bar 2008, an annual conference to share information and knowledge to further understanding of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder.

Elizabeth Haworth (Assistant Director, Furious Flower Poetry Center) received $500 from the Arts Council of the Valley for "Dr. Goddess Goes to Jail," a political satire performed through spoken word poetry, music, dance, comedy and acting. Haworth also received $500 from The Community Foundation to promote the genre of African American poetry by providing opportunities for education, research and publication through the fourth annual free Summer Poetry Camp for Disadvantaged Children in Harrisonburg and Rockingham County.

Christopher B. Nye (Executive Director, Blue Ridge Area Health Education Center) received $348,169 from the Harrisonburg-Rockingham Free Clinic to provide an array of volunteer outpatient health services to people who are uninsured in the local area. Nye also received $260,226 from the Department of Mental Health, Mental Retardation and Substance Abuse for the second year of support for the Infant and Toddler Connection of the Shenandoah Valley, a local system of early intervention services.

Dr. J. Barkley Rosser Jr. (Professor, Economics; Kirby L. Cramer Jr. Professor of Business Administration) received $36,500 from The Journal of Economic Behavior and Organization to provide editorial services.

Dr. Michael J. Saunders (Associate Professor, Kinesiology) received $27,043 from DMI Dairy Management Inc. to investigate the effectiveness of chocolate milk as an exercise recovery beverage during intensified training in competitive soccer players.

Lynne F. Stover (Teacher Consultant, Center for Economic Education) received $6,667 from the National Council on Economic Education for Mini-Society teacher training and implementation.

Dr. Leonard A. VanWyk (Professor, Mathematics and Statistics) received $51,580 from the National Science Foundation for "REU: Mathematics Research for Undergraduates at James Madison University" to provide student researchers with an authentic mathematical research experience and opportunities for interaction among diverse students.

Dr. Kenneth E. Barron (Associate Professor, Psychology) and C.S. Dr. Kenneth E. Barron (Associate Professor, Psychology), A.R. Brown (JMU student), P.K. Kaliski (JMU student) and S.J. Finney presented a paper, "Achievement goals, theories of intelligence, and well-being," at the biannual meeting of the European Association for Research on Learning and Instruction in Budapest, Hungary, August 2007.

Dr. Kenneth E. Barron (Associate Professor, Psychology) serves as a member of the Editorial Consulting Board for Personality and Social Psychology Bulletin as well as the Journal of Experimental Education.

Dr. Joann H. Grayson (Professor, Psychology) continues to serve as a board member for Habitat for Humanity (since 2005) for the Family Selection Committee.

Dr. Michael D. Hall (Associate Professor, Psychology) is serving as the program committee chair for the annual meetings of the Society for Music Perception and Cognition.

Dr. Natalie Kerr Lawrence (Assistant Professor, Psychology) serves as a reviewer for Teaching of Psychology. She is serving as the chair of the Planning Committee for the June 2008 Eastern Conference on the Teaching of Psychology, cosponsored by JMU and the American Psychological Association.

Dr. Bryan K. Saville (Assistant Professor, Psychology) is a member of the Society for the Teaching of Psychology's Teaching Awards Task Force and National High School. He is also a member of the Standards for Psychology Task Force. Saville began serving a three-year term as the section editor for "The Generalist's Corner" in Teaching of Psychology.

Dr. Sherry Serdikoff (Associate Professor, Psychology) is serving the first of a three-year term as the Applied Behavior Analysis track representative to the Program Committee of the Eastern Psychological Association and will serve as chair of the Program Committee for the 2009 and 2010 conferences.

Dr. Michael L. Stoloff (Head and Professor, Psychology) served as a member of the external review team for an academic program review of the Department of Psychology at Hampden-Sydney College, February 2008.

Dr. Tracy E. Zinn (Assistant Professor, Psychology) was elected an adviser of the Cambridge Center for Behavioral Studies during the 2007 Annual Meeting of the Trustees held in Chicago, Oct. 6, 2007.
