Two New Leaders to Serve on NAEYC Commission on Early Childhood Associate Degree Accreditation 

New Commissioners’ terms begin January 2015 

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- The NAEYC Commission on Early Childhood Associate Degree Accreditation (ECADA) is proud to announce two leaders in the field of early childhood professional preparation have been selected to fill upcoming vacancies. Dr. Nancy Barbour and Dr. Martha Muñoz will serve three-year terms beginning January 1, 2015. 

Dr. Barbour brings over 30 years of experience as an early childhood teacher educator to her new role as a Commissioner. She is a professor and head of the Early, Elementary, and Reading Education department at James Madison University in Harrisonburg, Virginia. She earned her M.Ed. in Elementary Education with an Early Childhood Education emphasis from Wichita State University, and her Ph.D. in Human Development and Family Studies from The Pennsylvania State University. In addition to serving on the Board of Examiners for the National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE), Dr. Barbour has also served as a Peer Reviewer for the ECADA system since its launch in 2006. 

Dr. Muñoz brings extensive experience in teacher education at both two- and four-year institutions of higher education. She is a faculty member at Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff, Arizona. She earned her M.Ed. in Early Childhood Education from Arizona State University, and her Ph.D. in Educational Administration from The University of Texas at Austin. Dr. Muñoz has served as a Peer Reviewer for the ECADA system and is the former President of the American Associate Degree Early Childhood Educators (ACCESS) association. 

The Commission on Early Childhood Associate Degree Accreditation is charged with making program accreditation decisions that are evidence-based, fair, and impartial by reviewing programs’ Self-Study Reports, Peer Review Reports, and Program Written Responses. Commissioners work together using a high degree of professional judgment to evaluate the extent to which a program has submitted evidence that it meets each accreditation standard. In addition to rendering accreditation decisions, the Commission is also responsible for developing and approving policies for the accreditation system.
