National Sales Challenge Team - 2017

SUMMARY: The JMU team earned 8th place at the National Sales Challenge, the Premier Collegiate Sales Competition.

The JMU team earned 8th place at the National Sales Challenge, the Premier Collegiate Sales Competition.  David Maimone and Brian Sweeter, both senior marketing majors, were accompanied by alternate Shelby Estevez, a junior marketing major and Marissa Piemonte, a sophomore marketing major.

Maimone and Sweeter earned their opportunity to compete at NSC. They did not let the opportunity slip by them as they worked hard in the Speed Selling event where competitors create a two-minute sales pitch about themselves. They also engaged in several rounds of fifteen-minute sales call role-plays with a business executive. In the meantime, Piemonte and Estevez supported the team as alternates in the speed selling and by earning points for the team at table talk events and corporate presentations.

While the award cruise around the Statute of Liberty was certainly a highlight, the biggest benefit was the company interviews earned by each.  Companies such as UPS, Henry Schein Dental, Polymer Shapes, and Granite Communications all offered both career and internship opportunities to the team.  Each member scored multiple interviews with the various companies.

Dr. Andy Wood, the team coach, says “It is these career engagement opportunities that represent the biggest award.  JMU and the Department of Marketing continue to be committed to being the change in these students’ life.”
