Seesawing to Aid Cancer Research and Remember Lost Loved Ones

DSP see-saw-a-thinFrom 7:00 p.m. on Oct. 20, 2013, until 7:00 p.m. on Oct. 27, 2013, brothers from Delta Sigma Pi, a professional fraternity at JMU, will be posted on a large seesaw located on the patio behind Zane Showker Hall. During this week, Delta Sigma Pi will be accepting donations for the American Cancer Society while also raising awareness and fundraising for the Michael Matthew Brown Memorial Scholarship.

Disbursed each year to deserving College of Business students, the Matthew Michael Brown Memorial Scholarship was created to commemorate an influential JMU student and inspiring Delta Sigma Pi brother.

Michael Matthew Brown attended JMU from 1987 to 1989. During his time here, Brown joined the brotherhood of Delta Sigma Pi, and he was quickly elected to the position of Vice President for Professional Activities. Also during this time, he was diagnosed with cancer.

Exemplifying the ideal brother, Brown never let his diagnosis dampen his spirit or determination to achieve his goals.  Throughout the course of his sickness, Brown continually gave back to the fraternity through his dedication and steadfast leadership.  Sadly, he would eventually pass away from the illness, but his impact lives on through the scholarship that carries his name.

The Delta Sigma Pi See-Saw-A-Thon is a way for the fraternity to honor the brother they lost, increase awareness about cancer research, raise money for the American Cancer Society, and bond as a fraternity.

This week, the brothers of Delta Sigma Pi encourage the JMU community to help support the Michael Matthew Brown Memorial Scholarship and the American Cancer Society. Donations will be accepted at any point during the 168-hour fundraiser, which ends on Sunday, Oct. 27 at 7:00 p.m.
