Another JMU Alumnus Makes Live Voting Round in Walmart Contest
Chad Hensley graduated from JMU in 2002 with a BBA in Computer Information Systems. After 7 years working as a software consultant, Chad started his own consulting business, Tall Shadows LLC, in 2009 and eventually launched HuntersClub.com and developed WISE trail camera software.
WISE is deer scouting and management software for the computer that syncs trail camera images with weather data and the moon phase. This allows hunters to pattern deer activity, ultimately making them more successful in the field. WISE will even suggest to the hunter where to hunt based on past data.
Walmart emailed Chad in July asking him to enter WISE into their “Get it on the Shelf” contest. It passed the audition round and made it into the live voting round, which started August 6th and ends September 2nd. In the live voting round, the public votes on products, and whichever one get the most votes has the opportunity to be sold online at walmart.com.
Chad came up with the idea while sitting in his tree stand one October morning. He had always wondered why deer and other animals are so active one day, and then the next day, there could be little to no activity. His theory was that it had to be weather, but that it was not discernible to humans. By combining weather data from over 20,000 weather stations across the United States with the time stamp on each image taken by a trail camera, Chad was able to start creating predictable patterns for deer based on wind speed, wind direction and temperature.
Chad attributes some of his success to his education from JMU.
“My CIS classes set the foundation for my software consulting career. With programming I was able to take something I was really good at and pursue my passion. Beyond that, business concepts come easy, and that foundation I developed in my core COB classes. I remember helping my COB 487 team to a dominating win in the “Shoe Game”, and I carried those techniques to the real world. My Facebook page currently has over 63,000 fans, and a lot of that was strategic marketing and building relationships with other outdoor companies.”
