Biotechnology Student Wins Prestigious National Scholarship
Joseph Balsamo, a junior Biotechnology major and pre-med, has been awarded a Goldwater national scholarship for 2014-2015 by the Barry Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education Foundation.
According to the foundation website, the scholarship is awarded, based on merit, to students "who have outstanding potential and intend to pursue research careers in mathematics, the natural sciences, or engineering." It covers full undergraduate tuition, fees, books, and room and board, up to a maximum of $7500 yearly.
Joe carries out undergraduate research in the lab of Dr. Mark Gabrielle, a professor in the biology department. where he "studies the development of the auditory system prior to the onset of hearing in mice".
