Wayne Epps is a junior media arts and design major with a journalism concentration. Within the first few weeks of his freshman year, Epps got involved and began writing about JMU sports for The Breeze. Epps’s talents were noticed and he quickly became the sports co-editor, a position he's retained the past two years. In addition to editing, Epps frequently contributes as a reporter for the sports section.

Epps has enjoyed the perks involved in sports writing. Epps has front row seats at every basketball game. He also appreciates the opportunity to travel, covering the JMU football team's away games. When the women’s basketball team went to the NCAA tournament in Spring 2014, Wayne flew to College Station, Texas, to cover the team’s first- and second-round games.

But beyond the ticket and travel perks, Epps values the real world experience he’s receiving at The Breeze. Since his time there, he has created dozens of bylined stories that will help build up in his portfolio. Furthermore, as an editor, Wayne gets to act as a mentor to his roster of reports and loves seeing their writing improve. He also contributes to the design of the section’s print pages. He even has a hand in The Breeze’s web presence by helping to manage the section’s Twitter account.

Epps believes that his time at The Breeze led to his favorite experience yet. In summer 2014, Wayne interned at USA Today and covered Major League Baseball and the Washington Redskins training camp. He split his time between Nationals Park and Camden Yards, writing baseball "enterprise" stories of human interest. After graduation, he plans to begin sports media career.
