Dr. Jacquelyn Nagel, assistant professor in the Department of Engineering, recently published an e-book for the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE-USA), the country’s largest engineering professional association.

Her e-book, Follow Your Curiosities: Finding Success through Learning, is the fourth in IEEE-USA’s Women in Engineering series. The series explores topics such as the underrepresentation of women in the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) field.

“Dr. Nagel has been an exceptional role model to young women in engineering,” said Dr. Kurt Paterson, Engineering department head. “She’s passionate about engineering, interested and nurturing with our students, and a rising spokesperson for engineering both locally and nationally.”

Dr. Nagel’s e-book highlights the influence her educational experiences had on her career. She details lessons learned at each stage of her education path, reflecting on what drove her to succeed as both an individual and engineer.

“My whole life is about following my curiosities and learning,” writes Dr. Nagel. “Staying true to myself and my interests has allowed me to be successful.”

Dr. Nagel joined the Department of Engineering in 2011. She is the faculty advisor to the JMU Society of Women Engineers Collegiate section, chair of the Women in Academia Committee, Member-at-Large secretary and Region E Member-at-Large representative.

“Our Society of Women Engineers members at JMU have emulated Dr. Nagel, providing critical leadership on events and traditions benefiting the whole Madison Engineering community,” said Dr. Paterson.

In addition to publishing her e-book, Dr. Nagel’s capstone design team took second place at the ASME 2014 International Design and Engineering Technical Conferences & Computers and Information in Engineering Conference, held in Buffalo, New York this past August.

Dr. Nagel also earned a two-year grant with Dr. Eric Maslen, Integrated Science and Technology department head, for research in Egypt. The award starts this October and ends in September 2016.
