What is the point of Hurcake Katrina Awareness Week?

JMU Alternative Break Program made a committment to continue going to New Orleans for 10 years after Katrina to help those who were affected. Now it is 10 years later and we are celebrating the progress made, recognizing existing needs, and focusing on the NOLA community. We have events and programs all week for you to do each of these things!

All Week

- Look in your residence hall for a bulletin board about disaster preparedness, safety, and security!

- Check out the Art Display in Duke Hall

- On the 3rd floor of the SSC, you look aat careers devoted to disaster relief in the CAP Resource Display

Monday 9/14

- Maddie Gras: A Mardi Gras themed commons day where we will be tie dying shirts, passing out beads, and listening to jazz music from 11am-2pm!

- American Red Cross Info Session: This is an info session co-sponsered with Career and Academic Planning where you can learn more about the American Red Cross organization and career oportunities. Join us in the Student Success Center, room 3270 from 5pm-6pm

- Welcome to New Orleans Documentary: 8pm-9:30pm in Madison Union Ballroom come out and learn more about New Orleans and then participate in a Q&A with Malik Rahim (who is in the documentary!)

Tuesday 9/15

- Science on the Sphere: This is a co-sponsered event with the Department of Interdisciplinary Liberal Studies and will talk about the Climate Change Module. It is an intellectual and environmental passport event in Memorial Hall 5110B from 12:30pm-1:30pm

- Keynote Speakers on Katrina Disaster: Go to Grafton at 7pm to hear from Caroline Heldman and Malik Rahim, founders of Lower Ninth Ward Living Museum and Common Ground Relief. This is a co-sponsered event with CMSS.

- Open Mic Night: Come to TDU at 7:30pm until 10:30pm and show off your poetry skills.

Wednesday 9/16

- Tea Time: Come dring Tea with ABP and Mad4U and talk about different topics related to disaster relief from 4pm-5pm on Madison Union Patio

- Celebration of Community at E-hall: get down to e-hall for dinner and enjoy a live band, cajun and creole cuisine!

- D.E.E.P. Impact: This event is co-sponsered with CMSS and it is an oppoirtunity for you to hear how you can make an impact on JMU. It is in the Madison Union Ballroom from 7-9pm

Thursday 9/17

- Is your apartment ready: If a disaster were to strike Harrisonburg, would you be prepared? Find out in the Highlands Room from 11am-1pm. This event is co-sponsered with Off Campus Life

- Resiliency & Compassion in times of disaster and trauma: we have teamed up with the Counseling Center to see the roles of resiliency and compassion during times of trauma, crisis, and natural disasters. This is an emptional passport in SSC 1075 from 2-3pm

- Drowning and self-rescue: UREC will help you learn what to do if you see someone drowning, or if you are in a situation where drowning is probable. From 4-5pm, go hit the pool in UREC for this event

Friday 9/18

- Gallery Reception: the art work has been in the Madison UNion Art Gallery all week, but from 11am-1pm you can come to the reception and look at highlights

Saturday 9/19

- Dynamic Earth: At 2:15pm go to the John C. Wells Planitarium for a full dome presentation showing impacts on natural disaster on the larger climate narrated by Liam Neeson
