NELSON INSTITUTE DIRECTOR TO SPEAK AT PUBLIC AFFAIRS CONFERENCE

HARRISONBURG—Dr. J. Peter Pham, Director of the Nelson Institute for International and Public Affairs, will give the opening address at today’s plenary session of the Public Affairs Conference on “Is Democracy the Global Solution? Navigating Democratic Ideals and Realities” at Principia College in Elsa, Illinois. The conference opened yesterday and concludes tomorrow.

First held in 1939, Principia College’s Public Affairs Conference is the oldest student-run conference in the United States. Past speakers at the annual event have included President George H.W. Bush, former Secretary of State Henry Kissinger, the Baroness Thatcher, and Senator Barack Obama. In addition to Dr. Pham, this year’s speakers include Dr. George B.N. Ayittey of American University, Professor Amy Chua of Yale Law School, Dr. Marc Morjé Howard of Georgetown University, and Dr. Vali Nasr of the Naval Postgraduate School.
