Instructor, Piano

Dr. Tonya Menard is a graduate of James Madison University with a DMA in Piano Performance, Literature and Pedagogy.  She is a nationally certified teacher through the Music Teachers National Association (MTNA) and a past president of the Tidewater Music Teachers Forum.  She is the current state theory chair for Virginia Music Teachers Association, working with a team of VMTA teachers to include twentieth-century idioms into precollege theory curricula.  Her theory research was published under the title “20th-Century Theory, It’s About Time: The Compositional Techniques of Maurice Ravel” in the April/May 2013 American Music Teacher magazine.  Dr. Menard is a collaborative and solo artist, lecturer, private vocal coach, piano, and theory teacher, as well as the primary accompanist for the JMU Chorale.  She teaches courses at JMU and Mary Baldwin College including piano pedagogy, class piano, and private lessons. Additionally, Dr. Menard enjoys conducting the Page County Community Choir and serves as the Administrative Assistant for the School of Music's annual Vocal Arts Camp.
