Assistant Professor, Music Education

Jesse Rathgeber is a music maker, educator, and researcher. He enjoys playing guitar, mandolin, and digital instruments at home, in classrooms, and in his work with music therapy rock bands. Jesse’s research examines the intersections of disability, inclusion, and creativity. He is a frequent presenter on creativity, disability, inclusion, listening, and progressive approaches to music teaching and learning at state, national, and international conferences. His scholarly work can be found in Music Education Research and in the forthcoming Ashgate Research Companion to Popular Music Pedagogy. Jesse has also co-authored a practitioner guide to Universal Design for Learning in music classrooms entitled Accessing Music.

Jesse is currently working on his dissertation as part of his Ph.D. experience at Arizona State University. At Arizona State University, Jesse taught undergraduate and graduate level courses on music education, elementary general music, music and disability, creativity, popular music, art and culture, and music in childhood. Prior to doctoral work, Jesse taught Early Childhood through 5th grade general music at Kildeer Countryside School District 96 in Long Grove, Illinois, where he also led a 4-5 chorus, facilitated a 2-5 Rhythm Band, mentored a 3-5 Young Composers Club, provided music education activities for an autism-like early childhood program, and served as a music coordinator for a district group dedicated to supporting students with autism spectrum disorders and their families. Jesse also taught K-12 general music, band, and chorus at DeLand-Weldon Community Unit School District 57 in DeLand, Illinois. Jesse attended the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign where he earned his Bachelor of Music Education degree with a specialization in elementary/general music. He also attended Northwestern University in Evanston, IL where he earned a Master of Music degree in music education with a specialization in composition/creativity.
