Reaching Tweens: Strategies & Activities for Older Singers and Beginning Instrumentalists

Workshop Fee: $160

Music educators know that children can become accomplished musicians when instruction is begun at an early age. However, addressing the musical needs of young people beginning their musical training in upper elementary, middle school, and beyond can be a challenge. How can we teach beginning musical skills to general music students who are not likely to respond to songs and games designed for young children? How can we teach music literacy and aural skills in the ensemble rehearsal while preparing for performance? Reaching Tweeners will address these and other questions through active, hands-on experiences.

In addition to activities appropriate to general and choral music, the class will also focus on instrumental instruction, showing educators how instrumentalists can improvise, compose chorales, play in tune, understand simple chord progressions, and read music, all in their first year of playing an instrument. Strategies are effective for singers as well as for students playing any wind, string, or percussion instrument, including the recorder. Learning strategies are based on Kodály, Orff, and Gordon philosophies of music education and student learning. Please bring your instrument.
