The Doctor of Musical Arts degree program is the most advanced course of study offered in the School of Music at James Madison University. The D.M.A. is considered the terminal degree in the areas of Performance and Conducting. Therefore, the JMU program is designed for musicians who have the potential to pursue the highest level of achievement in performance and teaching.

Performance, Pedagogy and Literature

The D.M.A. Performance, Pedagogy and Literature degree program is offered in all orchestral instruments, voice, and piano. Students will develop advanced performance skills. They will also greatly expand their knowledge of music literature and will be immersed in pedagogical methods specific to higher education.

Conducting, Pedagogy and Literature

The D.M.A. Conducting degree program is offered in choral conducting, orchestral conducting and wind conducting. Students will develop advanced conducting skills. Conducting majors will undertake a comprehensive study of the literature of their medium, develop advanced insights into the musical ideas and structure of the major works, and refine their conducting and rehearsal skills. They will also greatly expand their knowledge of music literature and will be immersed in pedagogical methods specific to higher education.
