Graduate course offerings and requirements

Students who do not pass the Music Theory diagnostic exam will be required to complete recommended remedial work prior to taking any Analysis course.

Graduate music theory courses include:

  • MUS 576 - Music Theory Practices

  • MUS 701 - Analysis of Tonal Music

  • MUS 702 - Analysis of Post-tonal Music

  • Related course: MUPED 704 - Music Pedagogy in Higher Education I (focus on Music Theory pedagogy)

Master of Music students must take either or both of MUS 701 and MUS 702, depending on concentration:

  • Composition: both MUS 701 and MUS 702 required

  • Conducting: either MUS 701 or MUS 702 required

  • Performance: either MUS 701 or MUS 702 required

Doctor of Music students in all concentrations are required to take both MUS 701 and MUS 702 as part of their core curriculum.
