MENTOR PROGRAM

The CMISS Mentor Program is designed to assist first-year students' transition to JMU. Monitoring academic progress, providing social interaction, emotional support, and referrals and resources are areas a CMISS mentor will address with their mentee. CMISS mentors are comprised of professional faculty, staff, or graduate students here at JMU.

ACADEMIC ASSISTANCE

Academic Advising and Career Development

ADVISING

Students are assigned an academic advisor. The students will work with their advisor during the Summer Transition Program (STP) and throughout their first two years of study. During this period, students will also work with their program of study advisor.

  • During the first year, students are required to meet with their academic advisor at least twice a semester.
  • Students work with advisors concerning class schedule and class load.
  • Advisors monitor the academic progress of students.

    ACADEMIC FOLLOW UP

  • Progress reports are mailed prior to mid semester to each individual professor for completion and return receipt. These reports will allow CMISS to provide any early intervention necessary to promote academic success (i.e. attendance, attitude, participation, test scores, etc.).
  • Graduate students will conduct monthly meetings with their individual student(s) and be an example, mentor, and sounding board regarding transition issues and concerns.

    EDUCATIONAL SKILLS DEVELOPMENT/ ACADEMIC RECOVERY

  • If students are experiencing academic difficulty, they will be instructed to meet with individuals who teach academic skill development.
  • Counselors help students enhance their existing learning and study styles. Students are also taught new strategies and techniques to increase the efficiency and effectiveness of their academic work.
  • Counselors examine how both study behaviors and individual attitudes contribute to academic success.
  • Students are offered individual counseling, instructional group counseling and workshops on academic skills and tutoring (i.e. time management, test preparation and test taking, strategies for reading and comprehension, procrastination, etc.)
  • Students experiencing difficulties may be referred as necessary to the reading and writing labs for assistance.
