The Q-Summit is a gathering of queer youth (18-25) leaders across the south for a day of movement-building, skill-sharing, and best-practices development. We recognize that LGBTQ youth are doing meaningful work across our region to build strong, resilient communities. We’re convening at the University of Richmond for queer activists to gather in a central location and strategize around the future of their movement(s).

In coordination with Transgender Day of Visibility, the LGBT & Ally Education Program is hosting Awareness Through Performance: Transgender Stories March 31 in Harrison 2105.
This is an event in which stories and experiences from the trans* community will be performed. We want to create a more trans*-inclusive community and we believe that a great step is to allow those who identify as trans* to share their stories and be heard, as well as give others the opportunity to hear about and learn from the experiences of those who identify as trans*. It is our hope that these stories will not only focus on people who are transgender, but also people who are genderqueer, bigender….etc. It is important to note that this event is not meant to speak for the trans* community, but to give a voice to their stories and experiences.
The objective of Awareness Through Performance: Transgender Stories is to use performance as a way to show experience. With this being said, the LGBT and Ally Education Program is inviting anybody who is trans* to submit a story, event, or memory to be read or performed at the event. We are accepting stories from students, faculty, staff, and the community. The stories can be monologues, poetry, etc., and they can be experiences (good or bad), advice, or stories to inform the audience of what to do or not to do. Writers can perform their own stories, or we can give the story to a volunteer to perform at the event. Also, if an individual doesn’t want to be credited for the work for confidentiality reasons, we are happy to leave the story as anonymous.
In order to make this event a success, we need people who are willing to share stories as well as people who are willing to perform. If you are interested in submitting a story or performing, please email Marieka Turner. All submissions are due by March 1.

Applications are now available for our 2014 JMU Female Institute and Male Academy Summer Enrichment Program.
The program is an exciting two-week Summer program, which provides an opportunity for students who will be rising 9th through 12th graders in the Fall of 2014 to live and learn on a college campus as well as enrich their development academically and socially.
