Friendship
Families
JMU's Friendship
Families is comprised of community members who are interested in meeting
international students. International students are then matched with
a Friendship Family. This program offers students an opportunity to
learn more about the United States outside the University setting. Families
invite students to participate in home traditions/activities/meals and
offer a monthly activity for all participants to attend.
Madison
International
Madison International
is a program specifically created to promote diversity and cultural
awareness among students. This program is housed in Ashby Hall, a residential
hall on campus. U.S. Nationals and Internationals come together to develop
a community where a natural exchange of culture is created. Residents
are accepted through an application process and serve on one of four
program committees. Housing is provided for Madison International participants
over the University holidays.
International
Week
International Week
is held each September. Bazaars, speakers, musicians, performers, etc.
come to James Madison University to share cultural flavor and education.
Transition
America
CMISS assists new
internationals with cultural adjustment and transitional factors as
they are oriented to the United States. A three-day orientation program,
Transition America, is held to provide an overview of the University.
CMISS also supports and facilitates activities and events that students
can participate in throughout the year.
International
Student Association (ISA) & Student Groups
ISA celebrates different
cultures and countries. Internationals and U.S. Nationals come together
as members of ISA to participate in social and educational activities.
In addition to ISA, there are various student groups of different cultural
origin affiliated with CMISS. These groups offer activities, support
and diversity awareness.
International
Student Leadership Conference
JMU and Eastern
Mennonite University (EMU) partner together to offer an annual leadership
conference to international students studying at universities in the
United States. Various workshops focused on leadership development are
combined with evening activities and a special keynote speaker. Students
from a five-state regional area regularly attend this conference.
