What is CMSS?
The Center for Multicultural Student Services assists James Madison University in promoting and encouraging diversity and cultural understanding. This is accomplished in a number of ways including student leadership programs, sponsoring diverse speakers and programs, as well as serving as an advocate for students of color on campus.
Where is the office located; what are the hours?
CMSS is located in Warren Hall, Room 245
Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.
Is it just for African-Americans?
No, everyone is welcome in CMSS. The Center provides services to all students regardless of their race or ethnicity. However, specific services for culturally diverse students on campus are available may be received in the Center. For example, CMSS provides services to Asian-Americans, Hispanic-Americans, Native-Americans, Jewish-Americans, and African-Americans. Multicultural Student Services also advises multi-ethnic clubs and organizations.

What organizations fall under the umbrella of Multicultural Student Services?
There are thirty student organizations under our umbrella. Currently 27 are active on campus. See the information posted in the display cases outside of our office to learn about sponsored events and meetings.
Can any student become involved with CMSS? How?
Anyone can become involved with CMSS. Students can get involved with the student organizations associated with CMSS, volunteer on program committees, partake in leadership programs, attend experiential learning trips, work with summer programs under the direction of this office, and utilize other opportunities in our office.
What is the relationship with the Office of International Programs?
Both offices work together in the successful leadership development and campus integration of international students. The Office of International Programs is divided into two branches - one branch is devoted to study abroad programs and one branch is devoted to international student services.
Are there jobs available for students in the Center for Multicultural Student Services?
The Center for Multicultural Student Services has several student employment positions through the academic year such as Multicultural Attaché positions, Student Assistant positions within the office, Resident Adviser positions for the summer programs under the direction of CMSS, and volunteer positions at any time during the year. Multicultural Attaché positions are made available spring semester of each year.
