Furious Flower: African American Poetry
from the Black Arts Movement to the Present
2004 University of Virginia Press
Edited by Joanne V. Gabbin
ISBN 0-8139-2253-4
The Furious Flower Conference of 1994 represented
the largest
gathering of African American writers at one event in nearly 30
years. In that crucial span of time, African American poetry had
evolved into an art less overtly political and more introspective;
it had also shown dramatic growth -- both in the number of readers
and practitioners. As a second Furious Flower Conference prepares
to convene, JMU Honors Program Director Joanne Gabbin has assembled
a selection of works by the participants. The 47 poets cover three
generations and range from such established voices as Michael
Harper, Nikki Giovanni and the late Gwendolyn Brooks to a host of
rising young writers who are reimagining America in the language of
a hip-hop nation.
Through These Doors:
A Journal of Faithfulness
2003 Garrison Press
By Harold D. Lehman ('42)
Harold Lehman traces the beginnings of the Park View Mennonite Church (established 1953) from its roots at Eastern Mennonite School through its 50th anniversary in 2003. Lehman's research includes church district affiliation, college relationships, building construction and pastoral transition. "Lehman's work is comprehensive with abundant interesting detail growing out of long personal association with the congregation and meaningful research," says Hubert Pellman, Eastern Mennonite University professor emeritus of English. Lehman has 45 years experience as an educator, teaching in elementary schools, Eastern Mennonite High School and on the faculties of EMU and JMU. He taught secondary education and school administration at JMU from 1967 until his retirement in 1986. He has published three other books, including Where is the Vision: the Laurelville Story (1993).
