impressed parents
We were just reading the latest issue [Winter 2004]
of Montpelier. With every issue we are
impressed with the achievements of JMU graduates and proud of our
association.

Do you need to be an
alum to receive Montpelier? I hope I
can continue to get it because I find it so
interesting. My son, John ('02), is a graduate and so is my
sister, Carol Ferris Schoeman ('80). After last spring's
graduation, my son, Matthew ('03), and his dog were captured in a
photo on the page about commencement, and we were all thrilled to
see it. Plus, it's such a great magazine.

DUKES ON ICE
After receiving the Winter 2004 edition of the Montpelier featuring Shayne Clausson's experience at
the South Pole, I am compelled to inform you that I know of at
least three other JMU graduates who have worked in Antarctica.
Anthony Beyer ('92), a mathematics major, was a member of the
cooking staff at McMurdo Station for two summers and a winter
(1994-96). My wife, Jonnette Tuft ('91), a biology major, first
worked at McMurdo Station in 1996 and is still involved with the
U.S. Antarctic Program as a marine
science technician. She is a laboratory supervisor on the two
research vessels that contribute to the overall scientific mission
of USAP. Also, I had the fortunate opportunity to work as a member
of the facilities maintenance department at McMurdo Station for two
summers and a winter from 1997 to 1999. Many
thanks to Clausson for his article and photos. I wish him
luck at Palmer Station, and I wonder who else has been to the
Ice.

TIME WITH MONTY
I have really enjoyed the last several issues of
Monty. Despite the deluge
of items to read, I am so impressed that I set time aside for Monty. What really caught my attention the most
was the article on Dr. Chong-Kun Yoon, a former professor of mine
[Summer 2003]. I found the article well written, full of relevant
poignancy and well photographed. Recently, the article about Shayne
Clausson [Winter 2004] was a great read. I think Monty is wonderful -- giving us a feel for the current
times at JMU and illustrating the impact of our school on alumni.

A GREAT MIX
The most recent issue [Fall 2003] of Montpelier was the best I have ever seen. The mix of
history and current events was great.

You and your staff have done an excellent job with
your features and coverage of many areas of interest. I have
written to you in the past stating: "this is a first-class
publication." It continues. Also, you should be recognized for the
overall production and especially the inclusion of many persons of
diverse backgrounds. Superb job, again.
