DEE MCDONOUGH ('77M) RECEIVED THE 2003 DIANE GEPPI AIKENS LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARDat the annual meeting of the Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association. McDonough teaches kinesiology at JMU and has been a "leading competitor, coach and administrator," noted the IWLCA in its presentation. As a player, she was a member of both the U.S. national lacrosse and field hockey squads. As a coach, she guided JMU to accomplishments on the state, regional and national levels. She helped establish an intercollegiate women's lacrosse national championship and a national poll for women's lacrosse. McDonough played both lacrosse and field hockey for the Dukes and was inducted into the JMU Sports Hall of Fame in 1993. After graduation, she was named to the U.S. Lacrosse Squad in 1974 and 1975 and the U.S. Field Hockey Squad in 1975. McDonough was named the South Atlantic Conference lacrosse Coach of the Year in 1991. She coached the JMU field hockey team from 1979 to 1990 and the lacrosse team from 1980 to 1994. During the 1974-75 season she worked with the U.S. Women's Lacrosse Association and the Association for Intercollegiate Athletics for Women to help establish a national collegiate championship in women's lacrosse. She also helped form the Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association, wrote the organization's bylaws and served two terms as its president. From 1988 to 1992 McDonough chaired the U.S. Women's Lacrosse Association committee, which selected members of the U.S. lacrosse squad.
