Constitution Center to educate public
In the near future, two icons of democracy - Philadelphia's Independence Hall and the Liberty Bell - will be joined by the National Constitution Center, a museum that will celebrate the Constitution.
Chartered by Congress in 1988 through the Constitution Heritage Act, the museum's groundbreaking occurred on Constitution Day, Sept. 17, 2000, with then-President Bill Clinton in attendance.
The museum will serve as an anchor to the newly refurbished Independence Mall and house a variety of interactive exhibits designed to educate visitors about the Constitution and to encourage them to become active members in the democratic process. The NCC expects a million visitors a year when the museum opens in 2003.
