Assistant Professor

Dr. Yamilette Chacon is Assistant Professor in the Department of Sociology & Anthropology. She received her Ph.D. in Sociology in 2014 from the University of South Carolina. She has conducted anthropological/sociological fieldwork among the Otavalo and Cotacachi Indians of Highland Ecuador. Her research interests include the development of social complexity, social psychology, sociological theory, historical sociology, organizations, collective action, education, immigration, race/ethnic/minority relations, the interlinking of race/class/gender/sexuality, Women’s Studies, as well as belief systems and ritual violence among indigenous peoples of Latin America. Professor Chacon has a special interest in encouraging members of minority communities as well as first generation college students to pursue higher education. Dr. Chacon teaches Social Issues in a Global Context, The Individual in Society, and Sociological Perspectives of Latin American Societies. Yamilette proudly represents COSTA RICA!
