Prospective Students
Thank you for your interest in the JMU MBA program. If you have questions
or would like an information packet sent to you please send your name
and mailing address to mba@jmu.edu.
Application deadline is June 1.
Program Length
The core MBA program consists of 12 courses (36 credit hours) of advanced
work at the graduate level. All candidates are required to take a common
core of ten courses and two additional courses selected from electives
in each of the functional areas. Full-time students can expect to complete
a degree in 16 months. Part-time students can expect to finish in 2
1/2 to 3 1/2 years.
While applications are accepted all year, students may begin the program
during the fall semester only. To remain on schedule, it is recommended
that students take four courses per calendar year. Classes meet one
evening per week during the fall and spring semesters and two evenings
per week during each of the six-week summer sessions.
Prerequisite Courses
Students who do not hold an undergraduate business degree must take
certain prerequisite courses to be eligible for admission into the MBA
Program. These prerequisite courses can be taken on campus at JMU (or
at other accredited institutions of higher education including community
colleges) or they can be taken through JMU over the Internet. Additional
information about these two methods is shown below.
Undergraduate Courses
The completion of the following courses at the undergraduate level
will fulfill the prerequisite requirements:
- Principles of Management
- Organizational Behavior
- Statistics
- Financial Accounting
- Managerial Finance
- Micro Economics
- Macro Economics
- Business Law
These courses are each three credit hours and can be taken at JMU or any accredited institution of higher education that offers an equivalent course. At JMU, these courses may or may not be offered at night and available seats may be scarce. In all cases, the courses are geared toward undergraduate students with no business experience. Further, each requires a full semester, which is usually sixteen weeks, to complete.
Online Courses
The completion of six courses offered by JMU over the Internet will fulfill the prerequisite requirements. These courses are the equivalent of three credit hours.
- MBA 501. Management and Organizational Behavior
- MBA 502. Statistics and Management Science
- MBA 503. Financial Accounting
- MBA 504. Managerial Finance
- MBA 505. Foundations of Economics
- MBA 506. Legal Environment of Business
Each course is offered three times a year and is 100% self-paced. Further,
each course requires eight weeks to complete.
The advantages of this option are: (1) Each course consumes only half the time of its undergraduate equivalent so that two MBA 500-level courses can be completed in the same time it takes to complete one undergraduate course; and (2) Students who are employed full-time can work on these courses at their convenience rather than having to come to campus at times that may conflict with their travel or work schedules.
